PHILIP GEBHARDT
Philip Gebhardt is a Hudson, New York based artist whose work explores gesture, structure, surface, and implied form. Working primarily in oil, he creates layered paintings through repeated acts of painting, drawing, scraping, and reconstruction. His work moves between abstraction and representation with an ongoing interest in the relationship between the physical surface of a painting and the forms that emerge from it.
Gebhardt was born in Putnam County, New York, and has lived and worked in Hudson for the past eighteen years. He studied at Fairleigh Dickinson University and earned a BFA from Marist University, followed by a master's degree in Art Education from The School of Visual Arts.
His work has been exhibited throughout New York, including solo exhibitions “Beyond Form” at Time & Space Limited in Hudson and “Between Bodies” at Arbor Gallery in Carmel. Alongside his studio practice, Gebhardt helps organize Hudson Open Studios and is actively involved in supporting and creating opportunities for local artists and the Hudson arts community.
Artist Statement
My paintings explore the space where abstraction and the figure begin to overlap. I build each piece through layers of paint, drawing, scraping, and revision, allowing elements of earlier decisions to remain visible. Rather than working toward a predetermined image, I respond to what develops on the surface, letting instinct and observation guide the process.
I'm interested in the tension between construction and erosion, how marks build up, disappear and reemerge over time. Line and structure are constant throughout my work, whether the paintings are more abstract or connected to recognizable forms and places.
My finished works are not intended to describe something specific. but to create a space where viewers can discover their own associations. I see each painting as an ongoing conversation between material, memory and response.
