Charles Harbutt holds a specialized degree in Technology in Music and Related Arts from Oberlin College Conservatory. With extensive expertise in electronic and computer music, Harbutt joined Sony Classical Productions in 1989. By 1992 he was senior recording engineer for Sony Classical. He is a two-time Grammy Award winner, a two-time Best Classical Engineer nominee and his recordings have won numerous Grammy and other international awards.
In 2007 Harbutt created a small, specialized post-production facility (Long Tail Audio LLC) to accommodate Classical, Jazz and Broadway productions.
In 2019 Charles left his home in New York City and moved to Hudson, NY where he began to rekindle his photography.
Artist Statement
Born into a Magnum Photos photographic family, I have always taken pictures. My current exploration involves reflections. stickers, bits of paint and the like left on lamp posts, doors and windows. Emphasis is on “unexpected” self-portraits, chance images that appear as the paper ages or is torn away, or where negative and positive space create surprising faces oft times seemingly violent and dark. I take these hidden and small elements and make them very large.
